Custom Challenge Coins
Custom Challenge Coins - are created from a die that is made from the design that you approve. Your die (mold) is then struck from raw metal material, specifically from a copper bronze base. The vast majority of Challenge Coins are “two sided” which means that they have designs incorporated into both sides, just like a typical coin. There are many exciting options that can be added to Challenge Coins like custom edging, 3 Dimensional Shapes and Text, and custom packaging and display cases. The stamping process creates raised and recessed areas along the pins face (very similar to a coin). Once the die is created and your pins are stamped from the die and checked for accuracy, your selected colors are hand-filled into the recessed areas with High Strength Enamel. Your Coins are then fired at 450°F for 12 to 15 minutes. An optional epoxy protective coating (dome) can then be applied to protect the color enamels from fading or cracking over time. Next, your challenge coins are hand polished one at a time and then plated with either 18K Gold or Silver, or several variations of Antiquing. Finally, each coin is inspected for quality and then individually packaged and Delivered via FedEx Overnight Air directly to your destination.
Challenge coins came to be back during the First World War and as the tradition goes...American volunteers had formed flying squadrons and each member of the squadron was given one of these bronze medallions by the Lieutenant or Commander. A member of one of these squadrons was shot down and escaped from Germany, then was recaptured by the French. Just before his execution his medallion(challenge coin) was noticed by one of the French and his life was spared.
What is the 'challenge' of the challenge coin?
After WW 1, a tradition began which insured that these squadron members carried their coins at all times and to insure the continuation of this tradition, each member upon greeting another would have to produce their coin. The member that could not produce his coin had to buy a drink of choice for the winning member. This tradition of “Challenging” continued for many years. Challenge Coins from LapelPins4Less.com are cast from Bronze Metal and Plated in Gold or Silver, and as such, these coins are designed to last a lifetime and carry on the memories of those whom they represent.
